Google Adds New Features to Help With Pandemic Travel Planning

Travel restrictions have been changing from country to country on a daily basis. It’s difficult to keep up with the latest information about where you can travel, if there are any quarantine restrictions, if your passport will allow you to enter that country, and the list goes on. Google’s idea is to introduce the most up to date travel information and conditions in one place.

Google Travel(opens in a new tab) has been making moves to become the world’s largest online travel agency (OTA) for a while now. Other OTAs have paid Google billions of dollars to reach the top of their search engine but in 2019, Google officially announced Google Travel — a direct competitor of Booking(.com), TripAdvisor, and other similar platforms.

These new additional COVID-19 travel features put Google closer to becoming the ‘one-stop-shop’ online travel service. The new additions include ‘travel trends’ that show what percentage of flights and hotels there are in that area. These alerts work with the travel advisory feature, which allows users to see whether the hotel, flight, or accommodation they’re booking offer free refunds, with the option to exclusively search for that option.

Our advice is to ensure you have all your information on Google My Business updated and to check your listing on Google Travel to ensure everything is correct. And for those who have a tour website, it’s incredibly important to have a clearly defined cancellation policy and to state to your potential customers that you are respecting the restrictions in place and you’re going above and beyond the protocol.
