World Tourism Organization’s COVID-19 Blueprint

The UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) has released a set of recommendations as a strong call to action to worldwide governments for the recovery and regrowth of the global tourism industry. As outlined in this document(opens in a new tab), the UNWTO has called for urgent support for the global tourism sector and assures that not only will it recover, but it will ‘grow back better’.

“These specific recommendations give countries a checklist of possible measures to help our sector sustain the jobs and support the companies at risk at this very moment. Mitigating the impact on employment and liquidity, protecting the most vulnerable and preparing for recovery, must be our key priorities,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

In the guide, there are 23 actionable points divided into 3 sections:

  • Managing the Crisis and Mitigating the Impact
  • Providing Stimulus and Accelerating Recovery
  • Preparing for Tomorrow

Each category is broken down into sub-sections which detail an actionable framework to help countries mitigate the immediate impact of the crisis on travel and tourism; provide stimulus for recovery and guide the long-term development and resilience of the sector.

Preparing for recovery: “We still do not know what the full impact of COVID-19 will be on global tourism. However, we must support the sector now while we prepare for it to come back stronger and more sustainable. Recovery plans and programmes for tourism will translate into jobs and economic growth.” said the Secretary-General.
